Sens et non-sens

Sens et non-sens : la formule signe d’abord le titre d’un ouvrage de Maurice MerleauPonty au sortir de la guerre (1948), et avec la déclaration suivante dès l’ouverture de la Préface : « Il faudrait que l’expérience de la déraison ne fut pas simplement oubliée. Il faudrait former une nouvelle idée de la raison » (Nagel, p. 8). De la phénoménologie à l’herméneutique, ou de l’intentionnalité à l’interprétation, la philosophie continentale s’est en effet et principalement construite sur le sens, ou à tout le moins sur l’a priori de la manifestation et de la signification. Tel est le « poncif » qui aujourd’hui ne va pas plus de soi. Comme le dénonçait Dominique Janicaud dans Le tournant théologique de la phénoménologie française, et bien loin des simples questions frontières entre philosophie et théologie : « une phénoménologie dont les dés ne seraient pas pipés n’aurait-elle pas plus d’attention à l’atroce, au désespérant, à l’inqualifiable, ou même seulement à l’indécidable où se trame aussi notre humaine condition ? » (L’éclat, p. 54). La philosophie de la religion, quant à elle, ne peut demeurer absente de cette quête - non pas du sens ou du non-sens, mais de l’en-deçà du sens et du non-sens. S’il est du pré-réflexif ou de l’infra-langagier, ce n’est pas toujours pour le tirer vers la réflexion ou langage, mais pour reconnaître aussi qu’il est aussi un lieu de notre « obscurité » où Dieu lui-même ne saurait rester étranger. Ainsi va, ou ira, la réflexion qui nous est ici proposée, croisant en tous points philosophie et théologie, et ne fixant pas de bornes prédéfinies sur ce qui est à penser : de l’Excès du sens à la Limite du sens, de la Limite du sens au Dehors du sens, du Dehors du sens au Cœur du sens, et du Cœur du sens au Corps du sens. C’est en allant en de nouvelles voies, qui à chaque fois seront les siennes propres, que les carrefours de la pensée viendront à se multiplier, et que les philosophes apprendront à se différencier.
Sense and nonsense: this formula first marks the title of a book by Maurice MerleauPonty which came at the end of the war (1948), and with the following statement at the opening of the Preface: "The experience of unreason cannot simply be forgotten: we must form a new idea of reason." (Northwestern, p. 3) From phenomenology to hermeneutics, or from intentionality to interpretation, continental philosophy has indeed and mainly been built on meaning [sens], or at least on the a priori of manifestation and meaning. This is the "common ground" that today is no longer self-evident. As Dominique Janicaud denounced in The Theological Turn of French Phenomenology, and far from the simple frontier questions between philosophy and theology: "Would not a phenomenology whose dice have not been fixed have more attention for the atrocious, despairing, unqualifiable, or even only undecidable—where our condition is also woven?" (Fordham, p. 69) Philosophy of religion, on the other hand, cannot remain absent from this quest—not from sense or nonsense, but from below sense and nonsense. If it is pre-reflective or infra-language, it is not always to draw it towards reflection or language, but also to recognize that it is a place of our "darkness" where God cannot remain foreign. Thus goes, or will go, the reflection proposed here, intersecting in every respect philosophy and theology, and not setting predefined limits on what is to be thought: from the Excess of meaning to the Limit of meaning, from the Limit of meaning to Outside of meaning, from Outside of meaning to the Heart of meaning, and from the Heart of meaning to the Body of meaning. It is by going in new ways, which each time will be one’s own, that the crossroads of thought will multiply, and that philosophers will learn to differentiate themselves.
